WebsiteOur Potato today was fries served with "black aioli".
The chips were enjoyable - a little bigger than what I am accustomed to referring to as fries, which I consider the exclusive domain of thin, regularly flimsy offerings that one might find at Hungry Jacks or McDonalds - but improved greatly for this change, I feel. They were crisp, crunchy and had a simple, pure flavour.
The aioli was unusual; tasty, certainly, but in a way none of us present could quite identify. Some suggested the flavour was sesame, which I could neither agree or disagree with myself. Personally, I found the aioli a little overpowering; I am a girl of simple tastes, a lover of salt and fat, and for me the strong flavour of the sauce suppressed the simple beauty of the humble chip upon which it rode. I noticed that the menu also offered a more standard aioli with other potato options, and I would consider asking for this instead next time I visit, if only for the comparison.
My Potato Accessories, today, were sourdough vanilla waffles with milk sorbet, chocolate, salted caramel, peaches and oat biscuit. These were accompanied by a slice of haloumi and a strawberry milkshake.
The waffles were, overall, a pleasant experience. Certainly, my instinct is not to complain. The waffles themselves were somewhat soft for my liking, and did not soak up the various fluid components in any great degree; however, they were tasty, and a food item with inbuilt well structures cannot fail to hold liquid entirely. The chocolate was somewhat disappointing, in that it had that distinct not-actually-chocolate flavour of, say, squeeze bottle chocolate sauce. The caramel was delicious, although there was not enough of it for my taste, and the sorbet had the unusual quality of tasting distinctly like cheesecake. The peaches were a nice touch, as was the addition of what seemed to be freeze dried strawberries, which were unexpected but went well with sorbet and chocolate both.
The milkshake was good; it tasted like strawberry, as strawberry milkshakes should. It was a good size for a drink with breakfast, but at the same time it was small for the price. With the slight dryness of the waffles, I found myself envying my friend who ordered juice instead. I did not find myself envying my other friend, who ordered coffee with a blob of ice cream included.
The haloumi, in all honesty, was unexpected. I discovered when it was served that there had been debate over whether to put it on the waffles directly, which was superficially the most disturbing prospect I had faced all morning; however, I soon discovered that this would have been completely fine. The haloumi's flavour would not have contaminated the waffles in any way, as it did not in fact have any flavour to begin with.
Breakfast today was pleasant, with friends and nice food. Honestly, I consider the fries to have been the best thing I ate, as well as the best value for money by far; I would consider only ordering them next time, but I fear my fellow critics would criticise me for it, as is their nature.
